Through the latest statements by teacher Elena Yparraguirre Revoredo, we have learned of the cowardly attacks and mistreatment committed by Peruvian State against her, for denouncing the murder of her husband, Dr Abimael Guzmán Reinoso, to prevent her from taking legal action and to silence her proletarian voice of condemnation of capitalism and defense of socialism.
The world has witnessed the 29 years in prison with absolute isolation in a military prison of torture against Chairman Gonzalo, without ever having been taken to a hospital to check his health, despite being 86 years old. And the world has also seen his unshakable communist position, without ever falling on his knees, facing upright, fist raised, all the perverse attacks of Peruvian and world reaction.
The grandiose tribute of the international working class and the peoples of the world, recognizing his extraordinary proletarian struggle and assuming to follow their example, has buried the crude maneuvers of pretending that no tribute is paid to him, and of allowing that, by burning his remains, he disappears from the minds and hearts of the peoples of the world. From North to South and from East to West, in all the corners of the planet, millions of communist and revolutionary masses have mobilised, pronounced and honored his memory eternally.
Face with its proletarian firmness and the advance of proletarian vanguard, Peruvian reaction was plotting their vile assassination. The facts show the systematic harassment, aggression and torture against our Abimael. Both the UN and the Pope have spoken out clearly against life imprisonment and isolation, which are nothing but permanent torture and slow murder. The infamies, the neglect of health, the isolation, the persecution of his lawyers, all that and more, Dr Guzmán faced it with unyielding firmness.
The last two years he was denied a visit by his wife, a visit to which he is entitled; they deepened his isolation by arresting his lawyers, they arrested 80 citizens in the illegal and abusive Olimpo Operation for demanding freedom for political prisoners and a new Constitution, and at the same time the so-called terruqueo [‘accusation of terrorism’] was reaching its maximum expression. In July this year, Dr Guzmán had a health crisis that was treated at the Naval Base Medical Center from 21st July until he recovered, as announced by INPE and verified by the Red Cross, the Ombudsman’s Office and his current lawyer. On 5th August, comrades Abimael and Elena thanked them the medical care in a written document, and reiterated the request for internal family visits.
However, falsely the newspaper Expreso and later Hildebrandt to their guns, in the second half of August they spread the news that he was admitted to a hospital, dying, and that he would die at any moment. Simultaneously, these media spread versions of the Navy and other reactionaries that his remains should be cremated and disappeared.
On Saturday 11th September at 6:40 a.m. Dr Guzmán suddenly died; days before his lawyer verified he was stable. Comrade Elena immediately sent a power of attorney for comrade Yris Quiñónez to pick up the body, given the refusal to hand it over to her, his wife, the only direct relative. Likewise, in legal use of a telephone call, she denounced the Peruvian State and the Navy as “those responsible for the murder of my husband and the disappearance of his body”. The same day, our comrade Elena addressed a preventive criminal complaint to the National Prosecutor “for the murder of my husband Abimael Guzmán Reinoso with ID No 44713261 in view of the fact that I am not allowed to see or pick up his body”.
On 12th September, teacher Elena is repressed in isolation for a month, for having made the complaint and expressing her pain with the words that the proletarian world has made their own:
On Monday 13th September, in a thuggish pose, the Minister of Justice Aníbal Torres requested and urged the Prosecutor of the Nation Zoraida Ávalos to “take the necessary measures” to proceed with the cremation, and warned that “any tribute […] will be considered such as the crime of apology to terrorism, punishable by up to 15 years in prison”.
On Wednesday 15th September, the prosecutor officially denied the delivery of the mortal remains to his relatives.
On Thursday 16th September, Congress approved its draft bill for incineration, and on Friday 17th September, Castillo signed the monstrous law of kidnapping and disappearance of corpses moments before traveling to México. Law with its own name and that was illegally applied retroactively.
All those hectic days the international campaign of recognition and tribute to Dr Guzmán unmasked the black reactionary dreams and brought together the revolutionary wills of the peoples of the world.
On Friday 24th September the mortal remains were cremated and his ashes disappeared, a cannibalistic fact that was filmed. They believed his crime would go unpunished and no one could pay him any tribute. But legal complaint is already underway and the historical truth is making its way.
These are the facts, not images, that show the process of harassment, torture, murder and disappearance of evidence against Dr Abimael Guzmán Reinoso, committed by the State, its Armed Forces and the governments that represent them. The cremation of the remains for alleged national security measures is a monumental fallacy. What national danger involved handing over the remains to his wife for burial or cremation? None. Only the immense hatred of the ruling classes towards those who rebelled against their exploitation, and the panic they feel in the face of a people that persists in fighting and resisting capitalist oppression, is the real reason for the atrocity they have committed and intend to continue committing against teacher Elena Yparraguirre and other political prisoners.
The campaign for the defense of the health, life and freedom of the political prisoners of yesterday, with 30 years in prison for waking up in the people’s war, and today, for fighting fro a new Constitution and fundamental rights, led mainly by our relatives, is a peremptory need for the real advancement of the people’s path and for the democratisation of Peruvian society.
In particular, we stand in defense of teacher Elena Yparraguirre against all the repression and harassment to which she is subjected, seeking to silence her complaints about the murder of her husband and for fulfilling her promise to follow her example as a communist to the end. We recognise and make own her new complaint made in a recent judicial hearing of Case Hearing before de Supreme Court of the Republic for Tarata case, where she says: “I was transferred in less than 24 hours and I was isolated, locked in a room, without being able to get any type of documente or receive any type of visit or a lawyer […]. For a month I have been isolated, and recently the Prosecutor’s Office has come to receive my complaint, and I have asked for guarantees […] a process was opened for me for a serious offense with a sanction, with the risk of being retuned to the closed regime again, in which I have already lived. For 18 years of my prison life I have lived completely isolated.
We condemn the harassment, torture, isolation and crime of the political prisoners of Perú. We demand respect for their fundamental rights like all Peruvian citizens. We demand their freedom because rising up against oppression is not a crime, demanding a new Constitution is not a crime, making revolution is the task of the peoples to end capitalist exploitation and oppression.

Muy agradecidos por la solidaridad internacionalista de los abogados de Argentina y Colombia que acompañaron al Dr. Chávez en la audiencia ante el Ministerio Público, donde nuestra compañera prisionera política profesora Elena Yparraguirre Revoredo expuso la ampliación de su denuncia por asesinato de quien fuera el Dr. Abimael Guzmán Reinoso, a la vez que pide garantías para su propia vida.
En vista de que no fue una audiencia pública y no se dispone de grabación de tan importante acontecimiento, la defensa brindó una conferencia de prensa el mismo 25 de octubre.
